On April 22, 2010 the Susi Q.'s Intrepid Travelers celebrated Earth Day at Crystal Cove and she thanked us back.
Wild flowers blazed yellow and orange. The sun slipped through the rain storms for a brief visit and the dolphins danced in the sea. Truly, Paradise is only 14 minutes away -- by bus, of course -- how divine!
Riders: Elizabeth Pearson, Mayor of Laguna Beach, Bea Field, Excutive director of Susi Q., Chris Quilter, Board President, Pat Chatlin and Ed Chatlin, Kerry Stoner, Lorraine Hollingsworth, Alba Rios, Marge Adams, Josephina Najesey, Sarah Pardo, Valerie Neidig, Runa Powers, Violet James, Romona and Vic
Opachor. Intrepid Travelers also marked its first anniversary promoting green travel by OCTA.
Note: The Gulf oil rig sank today in the Gulf of Mexico.

Appreciate your piece in the LBI. I have to say this though, as someone that's carless (by choice) and uses bicycle as primary transportation (by choice) I investigated bus as an option fairly recently. Say for an occasional get together with friends in Irvine (east of 5) and am shocked how poorly coordinated a 20 mile trip from LB to Irvine is. Costing over 1:42 of my time and with limited options of getting back home at a reasonable time after some fun, I have to say the county could learn a lot from some of my former cities of residence (NYC & DC). Sure, we're no major city with a grid that nicely supports public transportation, but nearly 2 hours to move from LB to what is arguably the city that's nearest to the residence of many who come to work for peanuts to support our restaurants is inexcusable. A restaurant worker in Santa Ana coming to LB to work would need to plan nearly as much time in transit as their shift is long. On my own, while living further south, I challenged myself to get to the airport for a flight (SNA) by public transportation. 12 hours is what I'd have budgeted to get it done. I passed. Sadly.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I am grateful for the efforts the city of LB has made in making public transportation affordable, reliable, efficient and cost effective. I wish the county would fund a system of similar quality.
So it's with that I say the snobbery is less about the thought of sharing a bus and more about what can one afford to invest personally (time & treasure). I've lived in places where the concept of snobbery is quickly extinguished by efficiency--and that lack of efficiency in OC is what limits uptake of public transit.
Thanks for bringing the project to the front of mind for many of us Pat.
Great Letter to the May 14th Editor in the Indy! Blog is looking good for a starter. Yea!
